After the stage of development stabilization during the years 2000-2002 the Polish insurance market entered the period of a moderate growth in 2003. In the table below basic ratios describing the insurance market in Poland have been presented for the period 1994-2003. Figures are given in Polish currency (PLN) and have been calculated in real values of 2003 r., on taking inflation ratios in consideration as published by the Central Bureau for Statistics (GUS).
Since 1994 the number of insurance business licensed companies has increased by above twofold. A remarkable growth covered especially the number of life insurance companies the number of which as for the end of 2003 was by 3,6-fold greater than that of 1994.
The growth of the number of insurance companies has implied the growth of their primary capitals. Their value for the end of 2003 amounted to 4,39 billion PLN and, in real terms, it was by tenfold higher than that of 1994. During the period under discussion the share of foreign capital in primary capital of insurance companies operating in Poland grew rapidly to reach approx. ok. 73,6% by the end 2003. A particularly high increase of foreign investments in Polish insurance sector occurred from 1998 on.
In the period 1994-2003 the dynamics of real growth of gross premium written amounted to 257%, whereby it was 374% in life insurance sector, and it was higher than the dynamics of the real growth of gross indemnities and benefits equal to 318%.
In life insurance sector the level of gross indemnities and benefits paid is still low as the period of activity of most insurers is rather short, although a significant growth has occurred since 2001 being the result of a wave of resignations of life policies at first and then by popularization in 2003 of tax-exempted time-limit policies concluded for the period of one year or shorter. Since 2000 the decrease of the real value of indemnities and gross benefits can be noticed.
Gross premium written per capita has grown , in real terms, from the level of 250 PLZ (whereby life insurance- 77%) in 1994 up to approx. 650 PLZ (with life insurance share of - 292 PLZ) in 2003. Since 1994 there has occurred the real increase by tenfold of the value of insurers investments which, by the end of 2003 amounted to 58,52 billion PLZ, whereby the share of life insurance sector was 37,04 billion PLZ. It is worthwhile to mention that since 1996 the gradual increase of the share of investments on account and at the risk of the Insured, the value of which amounted to 10% of total investments of this branch by the end of 2003.
